Selfportrait. Fritz von Uhde

Fritz von Uhde (1848-1911) decided to paint this little girl on a large canvas measuring 140 x 111 centimeters. Seen close up and in full length, the girl projects a kind of self-confidence that is rare among the "urchins" that figured so prominently in nineteenth-century art exhibitions. Uhde's painting follows the contemporary trend.

Uhde, Fritz van - VM - Nigel Halliday Fritz von Uhde: The Mealtime Prayer Jesus in our Home by Nigel Halliday I am not much of a fan of nineteenth-century religious painting. To me it often seems twee (Holman Hunt's Light of the world) or mawkish (Millais' Christ in the house of his parents) or just weird (Delaroche's Virgin and Child ).
